Badrinath Prasad & Local Offerings — What to Buy and Offer

Taking prasad from the Char Dham temples is one of the most important aspects of the yatra for most Hindu pilgrims. At Badrinath, the offerings, the prasad, and the devotional items have specific names and deep significance that every pilgrim should know.

Official Temple Prasad

The Badrinath temple offers official prasad distributed by the temple trust after darshan:

  • Panchamrit: A mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar — the same five substances used in the Mahabhishek. Considered highly sacred.
  • Charan Amrit: Water used to wash the feet of the deity (padodaka) — distributed in small portions.
  • Dry Prasad: Includes tulsi leaves, dry fruits, and a small sweet — taken home and shared with family.

What is Offered to Lord Badri?

Devotees can personally offer:

  • Tulsi leaves — deeply sacred to Vishnu; a handful offered directly in the sanctum
  • Chandan (sandalwood paste) — offered to cool and honor the deity
  • Flowers — particularly yellow flowers (marigold, chrysanthemum) associated with Vishnu
  • Coconut and dry fruits — standard offerings

Charan Paduka — The Footprints

One of the most unique items at Badrinath is the Charan Paduka — a stone slab bearing the footprints of Lord Vishnu, located a short walk above the main temple. Devotees touch their foreheads to these sacred footprints and offer flowers. The footprints are considered especially auspicious for those seeking health and prosperity.

Shopping Near Badrinath Temple

The market lane running alongside the temple has shops selling:

  • Official prasad packages (₹50–₹500)
  • Chandan, tulsi, and puja items
  • Small idols of Lord Badri-Vishal in various sizes
  • Badrinath-branded items (calendars, photos, etc.)
  • Local woolen items from the Bhotiya traders of nearby Mana Village

Authentic vs Fake Prasad

Beware of vendors outside the temple gate selling “official prasad” — this is often not temple-authorized. Always collect prasad from inside the temple’s designated prasad counter. The temple trust’s prasad is sealed and marked with the official Badrinath temple stamp.
