Of all the temple ceremonies at the Char Dham, the Badrinath Aarti holds a unique grandeur. Set against the sound of the rushing Alaknanda River below, with the massive Nilkantha Peak towering behind the temple, and the night air carrying both extreme cold and extreme devotion, the Badrinath Aarti creates a spiritual intensity that is difficult to replicate anywhere else in the world.
Mahabhishek Aarti (Early Morning)
The day’s first major ritual — the Mahabhishek — begins at 4:30 AM. The lingam is bathed with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) and then adorned with fresh flowers, tulsi, and bhasma (sacred ash). The chamber is lit with oil lamps, and Vedic mantras are chanted by the head Rawal and temple priests. This is an intimate, restricted ritual — requires advance booking and access to the inner chamber.
Balabhog Aarti (7:00 AM)
The Balabhog is the morning food offering — a full meal is prepared for the deity in the temple kitchen and symbolically offered with aarti. This shorter ceremony is open to devotees who arrive early.
Evening Aarti — Sandhya Aarti
The Sandhya Aarti is the ceremony most pilgrims experience and the one that stays with them forever. It begins at approximately 7:30–8:00 PM as the sun sets behind Nilkantha and the air temperature drops sharply.
What happens:
- Large brass diyas (oil lamps) are lit and waved before the deity in the sanctum
- Temple bells, gongs, and conch shells are sounded continuously
- Priests chant Vishnu Sahasranam (the thousand names of Vishnu) and Bhajan
- The congregation joins — sometimes thousands standing in the forecourt, inner hall, and surrounding areas
The sound of the Alaknanda roaring below combines with the bells, chants, and the collective devotion of the assembled pilgrims to create a sensory experience of profound spiritual power.
How to Attend for Free
The evening aarti is completely free and open to all. Simply arrive 30–45 minutes before (around 7:00 PM) to secure a spot near the entrance to the main hall. No passes or tickets required.
VIP Pass Options
For early morning Mahabhishek access, VIP passes are available. The temple counter near the main entrance sells these at ₹300–₹1,500 depending on the puja level. Pre-booking through the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website is possible.
The Badrinath Aarti is not a performance for tourists. It is 1,200 years of unbroken devotion — the same prayers offered by generations of priests and pilgrims before you, and the same ceremony that will continue long after you return home.
