Badrinath in Winter — What Happens When the Temple Closes?

Badrinath Temple closes every year in late October or November — and when it does, something extraordinary happens. The deity doesn’t simply stay in an empty shrine. According to centuries-old tradition, Lord Badri-Vishal travels to Joshimath for the winter, accompanied by the same rituals and devotion that marked the opening in spring.

Badrinath Closing Date and Ceremony

The Badrinath Temple closing date is determined by the Vedic calendar — typically a day after Diwali (late October/early November). The exact date is announced months in advance. The closing ceremony (Doli Utsav) is a spectacular procession:

  • The idol of Udhav Ji (the deity that stays behind at Badrinath during winter) is placed in the sanctum after Lord Badrinath’s departure
  • The main deity (Lord Badri-Vishal) is placed in a palanquin (Doli) and carried down the mountain
  • Thousands of devotees line the route, showering the palanquin with flowers, incense, and prayers
  • The Doli travels to Joshimath, where the deity is installed at the Narasimha Temple for the winter months

Where Does Lord Badri Go in Winter?

The divine palanquin is installed at the Narasimha Temple in Joshimath — where it remains from November to May. Pilgrims visiting Joshimath in winter can take darshan of Lord Badri-Vishal here.

What Badrinath Looks Like in Winter

By December, Badrinath receives 5–8 metres of snowfall. The temple and surrounding areas are completely buried under snow. The road from Joshimath closes (typically by November). The town is deserted — only a handful of ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) personnel and the small caretaker staff remain throughout winter.

Winter Tourism Near Badrinath

While Badrinath itself is inaccessible in deep winter, the Joshimath-Auli belt offers winter skiing from December to March. Some trekkers attempt the Badrinath area in early winter (late October/November) for dramatic snowscape photography — but this requires extreme preparation and is not recommended for general tourists.

The Upcoming 2026 Opening Ceremony

After months of winter quiet, the Doli from Joshimath makes the return journey to Badrinath each May — welcomed by thousands of devotees who line the route. The divine arrival at Badrinath, and the first aarti of the new season, is one of the most moving religious events in the Garhwal calendar.
