Covering Badrinath and Kedarnath in a single trip is the essence of the Do Dham Yatra — and understanding the road between them is key to planning the logistics. The two shrines are in different river valleys, requiring a significant mountain drive between them.
Route Overview
Badrinath and Kedarnath are NOT directly connected by road (no road exists through the mountains between them). The route requires backtracking to Rudraprayag, the junction town where the Alaknanda (Badrinath) and Mandakini (Kedarnath) valleys meet.
Badrinath → Joshimath → Chamoli → Karnaprayag → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag/Gaurikund (Kedarnath base)
Distance and Driving Time
- Badrinath to Rudraprayag: 160 km | 5–6 hours
- Rudraprayag to Guptkashi: 60 km | 1.5–2 hours
- Guptkashi to Sonprayag: 30 km | 1 hour
- Total (Badrinath to Kedarnath base): ~250 km | 8–9 hours
Key Stops
Joshimath (45 km from Badrinath): Good for a fuel stop, light breakfast, and if needed — accommodation. The Narasimha Temple is worth a quick darshan.
Chamoli (110 km from Badrinath): Small town with fuel stations, ATMs, and basic eateries. A practical stop.
Rudraprayag (160 km from Badrinath): The junction. Good hotels and restaurants here — ideal for a longer lunch break or an overnight halt. The Sangam of Mandakini and Alaknanda is worth a 15-minute stop.
Guptkashi (220 km): The strategic Kedarnath base with the best accommodation on the Kedarnath approach. Many tour groups break the journey here.
Road Conditions and Alerts
The Badrinath highway between Chamoli and Rudraprayag has several landslide-prone stretches. Between Rudraprayag and Guptkashi, the road passes through the narrow Mandakini Valley — beautiful but with tight turns and potential debris during monsoon.
Where to Break the Journey
For those doing the Do Dham Yatra:
- Option A: Badrinath darshan Day 1 → drive to Guptkashi (arriving late evening, 8–9 hrs)
- Option B: Badrinath darshan Day 1 → halt at Rudraprayag (5–6 hrs) → Kedarnath base Day 2 morning
Option B is more comfortable and allows a fresher start for the Kedarnath trek.
