Uttarkashi — “Northern Kashi” — earns its evocative name through its deep Shiva devotion, sacred rivers, and position as the spiritual gateway to the Gangotri Dham. Located at 1,165 metres on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, this vibrant mountain town is the headquarters of Uttarkashi district and the most important base for Gangotri Yatra.
Why It’s Called “Uttarkashi”
Just as Varanasi (Kashi) is the sacred city of Lord Vishwanath on the Ganga in the plains, Uttarkashi is the Himalayan equivalent — a city of Lord Vishwanath (Shiva) on the Bhagirathi. The mythology connects both cities: when Varanasi was threatened by demon kings, Lord Vishwanath and his entire divine entourage relocated to Uttarkashi for a period. The spiritual energy of Kashi thus lives in Uttarkashi’s temples and rivers.
Vishwanath Temple
The main temple of Uttarkashi is the Vishwanath Temple — one of the most significant Shiva temples in Uttarakhand. Its most distinctive feature is a massive sacred trident (trishul) made of iron, approximately 6 metres tall, said to have been planted here by Goddess Sati in the Puranic age. This trishul is considered so sacred that it cannot be moved or relocated. The temple complex also has shrines to Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, and other deities.
Shakti Temple
Adjacent to the Vishwanath Temple is the Shakti Temple — an important centre of goddess worship in this region. The temple is particularly busy during Navaratri festivals.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM)
Uttarkashi is home to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) — one of India’s premier mountaineering training institutes, founded in 1965. NIM has produced generations of legendary Indian mountaineers. The institute conducts basic and advanced mountaineering courses throughout the trekking season. Visitors can see the NIM museum and explore the institute grounds.
River Rafting and Adventure Sports
The Bhagirathi River near Uttarkashi offers white-water rafting — a thrilling addition to any Gangotri Yatra itinerary. The stretch from Maneri Dam to Uttarkashi has Grade II-III rapids, suitable for beginners. Several operators run half-day rafting trips (₹1,000–₹2,000 per person).
Trekking Trails from Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi is the base for some excellent treks:

Hotels and Accommodation
Uttarkashi has Uttarakhand’s best range of accommodation outside Haridwar/Rishikesh — budget to mid-range. Several good hotels near the main bazaar offer attached bathrooms, hot water, and good restaurant service. Prices: ₹700–₹3,000/night.
Best Time to Visit
May–June and September–October are ideal. Uttarkashi’s altitude means it’s pleasant even in summer. Winter (December–February) is cold but beautiful.
