Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi has a deep connection with Hindu mythology. The name "Uttarkashi" means "Northern Kashi," linking it to Varanasi (Kashi), one of Hinduism’s holiest cities. Legend says that Lord Shiva meditated here for many years, making it a spiritually powerful place.
The town is home to the famous Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Unlike the temple in Varanasi, the Shiva lingam here is naturally formed, not made by humans. Another important temple is the Goddess Kuteti Devi Temple, believed to protect the town from natural disasters.
Traditional Festivals and Local Life
The people of Uttarkashi celebrate many festivals with great joy. Some of the major ones are:
Makar Sankranti (January) – People take holy dips in the Bhagirathi River.
Maha Shivratri (February/March) – A big fair is held at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple with prayers and cultural performances.
Ganga Dussehra (May/June) – Celebrates the day the Ganges River descended to Earth.
The local culture is rich with Garhwali traditions. Folk dances like Jhora, Chholiya, and Pandav Nritya are performed during festivals. The people are warm and welcoming, often seen wearing traditional Garhwali attire and enjoying local food like Bhatt ki Churdkani (black soybean curry) and Aloo ke Gutke (spiced potatoes).
