Uttarkashi — The Kashi of the Mountains

Uttarkashi, known as the “Northern Kashi,” serves as a profound spiritual gateway to the Gangotri Dham. Situated at an elevation of 1,165 metres along the sacred banks of the Bhagirathi River, this vibrant town is not only the administrative headquarters of the Uttarkashi district but also a vital stopover for pilgrims embarking on the Gangotri Yatra.

Why It’s Called “Uttarkashi”

Just as Varanasi (Kashi) is revered as the city of Lord Vishwanath on the Ganga, Uttarkashi is considered its Himalayan counterpart. According to local mythology, when Varanasi was threatened by demon kings, Lord Vishwanath and his divine entourage relocated to Uttarkashi, imbuing the town with the same spiritual sanctity and energy found in the holy plains.

Key Spiritual Landmarks

Vishwanath Temple

The crown jewel of the town is the Vishwanath Temple, a site of immense significance in Uttarakhand. Its most iconic feature is a massive, 6-metre-tall iron trident (trishul). Legend states it was planted by Goddess Sati in the Puranic age and is considered immovable. The complex also houses beautiful shrines dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Ganesha.

Shakti Temple

Located right opposite the Vishwanath Temple, the Shakti Temple is a prominent centre for goddess worship. It draws thousands of devotees, especially during the vibrant Navaratri festivals.

Adventure and Mountaineering

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM)

Founded in 1965, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is India’s premier training hub. It has shaped many legendary mountaineers. Visitors are encouraged to explore the NIM museum to learn about the history of Himalayan climbing.

River Rafting

The Bhagirathi River offers exciting opportunities for white-water rafting. The stretch from Maneri Dam to Uttarkashi features Grade II-III rapids, making it perfect for beginners and adventure enthusiasts looking to add thrill to their Yatra itinerary.
