The accommodation strategy for Gangotri Yatra is essentially a three-tier decision: Uttarkashi (comfort base), Harsil (scenic midpoint), or Gangotri town (at the temple itself).
Option 1: Stay in Uttarkashi (Best for Comfort)
Uttarkashi, 100 km from Gangotri, is the most comfortable base — it has the best hotels, ATMs, medical facilities, restaurants, and connectivity on the Gangotri route. Stay here for 2 nights: one for acclimatization and temple darshan in Uttarkashi itself, one for returning after the Gangotri day trip.
Top hotels in Uttarkashi:
- Hotel Dhareshwar: Clean rooms, good restaurant, central location, ₹1,200–₹2,500
- Hotel Aggarwal: Budget-friendly, basic but clean, ₹600–₹1,200
- GMVN Tourist Rest House Uttarkashi: Reliable, riverside location, ₹700–₹1,500
Option 2: Stay in Harsil (Best for Scenery)
Harsil (25 km from Gangotri) is arguably the most beautiful base camp of any Char Dham. Wake up here and you step out into a Himalayan paradise before the day’s rush.
Hotels in Harsil:
- Hotel Wilson’s: Heritage-style property named after Frederick Wilson, ₹1,500–₹4,000
- GMVN Harsil Tourist Rest House: Excellent value, riverside location, ₹800–₹1,800
- Bhagirath Homestay: Run by local families; authentic Garhwali experience, ₹600–₹1,200
Option 3: Stay in Gangotri Town (At the Dham)
Gangotri itself has about 20–30 guesthouses and dharamshalas, all basic. The advantage is waking up in the temple atmosphere and attending the 6 AM aarti without a long morning drive.
- Ganga Niwas Ashram, Dharamsala: Free or donation-based; basic rooms
- Hotel Gangotri: Modest but adequate, ₹700–₹1,500
- GMVN Gangotri Camp: Tents and basic rooms, ₹600–₹1,200
The town has no ATMs — carry cash from Uttarkashi.
