Guptkashi
Guptkashi, meaning "Hidden Kashi", is a sacred Himalayan town in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, nestled at 1,319 meters (4,327 feet). Located en route to Kedarnath Temple, it serves as an important pilgrimage stop and alternative base for the Kedarnath Yatra.
The town is renowned for its ancient Vishwanath Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Ardhanarishwar Temple, believed to be where Shiva hid (gupt) from the Pandavas after the Mahabharata war. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, apple orchards, and the Mandakini River valley, Guptkashi offers a peaceful blend of spirituality and nature.
Unlike crowded pilgrim hubs, Guptkashi retains an authentic mountain-town charm, with traditional Garhwali houses, terraced farms, and panoramic views of Chaukhamba Peak. It’s also the last major town before the Kedarnath trek (30 km away), making it a crucial acclimatization spot.
