New Tehri
New Tehri, the planned capital of the Tehri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand, India, is a modern town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas. Built to replace the old Tehri town submerged under the Tehri Dam reservoir, New Tehri is known for its scenic beauty, pleasant climate, and well-structured urban planning. Situated at an elevation of around 1,550 meters (5,085 feet), it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Bhagirathi River.
The town serves as a gateway to several Himalayan trekking routes, pilgrimage sites, and adventure destinations. Unlike its predecessor, New Tehri was designed with wide roads, organized residential areas, and ample green spaces, making it an ideal blend of urban convenience and natural beauty.
History of New Tehri
The Submergence of Old Tehri
Old Tehri, a historic town with deep cultural roots, was submerged in the early 2000s due to the construction of the Tehri Dam, one of the tallest dams in the world. The dam project, initiated in the 1970s, faced significant opposition due to environmental concerns and the displacement of thousands of people.
The Birth of New Tehri
To rehabilitate the displaced residents, the government planned New Tehri, a meticulously designed hill town with modern infrastructure. Construction began in the 1980s, and by the 2000s, it became the new administrative hub of Tehri Garhwal.
Cultural Heritage
Despite its modern layout, New Tehri retains the cultural essence of Garhwal. The people, primarily of Garhwali ethnicity, celebrate traditional festivals like Makar Sankranti, Harela, and Phool Dei with great enthusiasm. The town also serves as a base for pilgrims heading to Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Badrinath.
